The lowdown: Sushi is Amura's forte. But Amura is not like other sushi restaurants. It isn't a chophouse by any stretch of the imagination -- and we can't imagine why it would want to be. Amura lifts sushi and Japanese cuisine out of the usual and makes it something special. That should be enough. Besides a full bar, Amura has a wine list that is more extensive than the usual sake found at other sushi restaurants.
The background: Amura first opened at Church Street Market in downtown Orlando in 1998 under the name Samurai. A complaint from another restaurant claiming rights to that name caused the owners to drop the first and last letters to come up with a new and unique name. Then Amura joined the boom on Sand Lake Road's restaurant row with a splashy, post-modern decor of brushed steel, shiny surfaces and moody lighting. And perhaps it was only coincidence that the food seemed better. There is a location in the Seminole County community of Heathrow as well.
