Hurricane Irene hits the Dominican Republic

A girl walks along a beach carpeted with debris in the battered town of Nagua on August 23, 2011 as winds and rain of Hurricane Irene are still lashing the northern coast of the island of Hispaniola, which the Dominican Republic shares with Haiti. The category two hurricane skirted the north coast of the Dominican Republic with sustained winds of 160 km per hour and moving in a northwesterly direction. Some 11,000 people were evacuated and placed in shelters or private homes.
