The career of the Buckeyes unapologetic football coach effectively ended on Dec. 29, 1978. It was on that day that Clemson linebacker Charlie Bauman intercepted Ohio State quarterback Art Schlichter in the closing minutes of the Gator Bowl to seal a 17-15 Tigers victory. When Bauman ran out of bounds in front of Hayes near the Ohio State bench, Hayes struck Bauman with punch in full view of television cameras. Hayes was fired in the aftermath of the incident. Still a celebrated figure in Buckeyes lore, Hayes has building named after him on Ohio States campus.
