The Punch: Woody Hayes, Ohio State football coach

The career of the Buckeyes’ unapologetic football coach effectively ended on Dec. 29, 1978. It was on that day that Clemson linebacker Charlie Bauman intercepted Ohio State quarterback Art Schlichter in the closing minutes of the Gator Bowl to seal a 17-15 Tigers’ victory. When Bauman ran out of bounds in front of Hayes near the Ohio State bench, Hayes struck Bauman with punch in full view of television cameras. Hayes was fired in the aftermath of the incident. Still a celebrated figure in Buckeyes’ lore, Hayes has building named after him on Ohio State’s campus.
