Academic Fouls: Clem Haskins, Minnesota basketball coach

This March’s <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="OREDU0000001" title="National Collegiate Athletic Association" href="/topic/sports/national-collegiate-athletic-association-OREDU0000001.topic">NCAA</a> basketball tournament will mark the 10-year anniversary of the rampant academic scandal at Minnesota that led to <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PECLB002265" title="Clem Haskins" href="/topic/entertainment/clem-haskins-PECLB002265.topic">Clem Haskins</a> dismissal as head coach. A former academic counselor at Minnesota told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that she had written more than 400 papers and taken tests for Gophers basketball players between 1993 and 1998, all with Haskins fully aware it was going on. The NCAA gave Haskins a seven-year show-cause penalty, at the time the harshest penalty it had ever levied.
