Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig was breaking records when his play began a sudden and abrupt decline in 1938. He played his last major league game in 1939 before he was diagnosed with ALS. The disease led to paralysis, difficulty swallowing and speaking and a life expectancy of less than three years. He died in 1941 at the age of 37. Lou Gehrig stands in the dugout at Yankee Stadium in New York in 1939.
