Ernie Davis

Ernie Davis was the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy in 1961. Out of Syracuse, he was the number-one pick in the 1962 NFL draft. But Davis was diagnosed with leukemia that summer and died in 1963 at the age of 23. SPECIAL TO THE SENTINEL
