Teddy bears

Teddy bears were originally inspired by an unnamed bear that U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot during a hunting trip because Roosevelt's attendants had cornered and clubbed the bear. In 1902, political cartoons began appearing in the Washington Post featuring a caricature of the bear (pictured). A Brooklyn storekeeper was inspired by the cartoons to create and sell a toy he dubbed "Teddy's Bear", and the teddy bear craze took off thereafter.
