New York's Bess Myerson won the Miss America title in 1945, becoming the first Jewish Miss America. She was told that she would never win the competition unless she changed her name to something "less Jewish." After winning, Catalina Swimsuits did not ask Myerson to be a spokeswoman, even though every queen before her had the sponsorship deal. Myerson went on to serve in politics and won numerous awards for her philanthropic work.
