Joe Frazier defeats Muhammad Ali

It was during a golden age of heavyweight boxing, when fight fans filled massive arenas and boosted the sport's television ratings that Joe Frazier became the first fighter to defeat Muhammad Ali in 1971. Frazier then lost two epic rematches including a ferocious battle known as the "Thrilla in Manila." He died at 67. In this March 8, 1971, photo, Frazier is directed to a corner by referee Arthur Marcante after Frazier knocked down Ali during the 15th round of the title bout in Madison Square Garden in New York.
