Joe Frazier defeats Muhammad Ali

It was during a golden age of heavyweight boxing, when fight fans filled massive arenas and boosted the sport's television ratings that <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PESPT001536" title="Joe Frazier" href="/topic/sports/boxing/joe-frazier-PESPT001536.topic">Joe Frazier</a> became the first fighter to defeat <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PECLB000060" title="Psy (entertainer)" href="/topic/entertainment/psy-%28entertainer%29-PECLB000060.topic">Muhammad Ali</a> in 1971. Frazier then lost two epic rematches including a ferocious battle known as the "Thrilla in Manila."  He died at 67. In this March 8, 1971, photo, Frazier is directed to a corner by referee Arthur Marcante after Frazier knocked down Ali during the 15th round of the title bout in Madison Square Garden in New York.
