It's been many years since Sherri Shepherd and her grandmother watched Bob Eubanks hosting the original version of "The Newlywed Game," but she says when it comes to the current Game Show Network version of the show, the more things change, the more they have stayed the same.
"What's so great about GSN is that they haven't changed the format," says Shepherd, who recently started hosting the weekday show. "When you have favorites like this one, you don't want to see it all changed up.
"I still ask them about 'making whoopee.' Sometimes we get more adult answers to the questions now than they used to, but it's still probably OK for kids to watch, as long as they don't understand the innuendoes."
Even though more couples today live together before marriage than they used to, that doesn't mean these newlyweds know each other any better.
"We will have couples who have just gotten married, but they have lived together for years, and they even have kids, but they still are just as clueless," she says, laughing. "When a couple gets something wrong, and I don't interject anything and just let them argue, they'll go, 'Oh, my God, I can't believe you said that about my mother. I had no idea you felt that way!' "
GSN relocated the show to New York to accommodate Shepherd, who also juggles parenting a preschooler with daily appearances on ABC's "The View" and a recurring role on NBC's "30 Rock."
"I consider myself blessed in this day and time to be doing something I have dreamed about since I was a little girl, so it doesn't even really seem like work," she says. "I never let anything interfere with my son. I get home in time to read him a story, and then we go to bed."
