The Last Airbender Wii, DS/$29.99-$39.99/Available Now
The popular animated TV series "Avatar: The Last Airbender" has seen its fair share of video game merchandising that follows the martial-arts-laden warfare of protagonist Aang. Now, as we wade knee-deep into the blockbuster movie season, we're greeted by M. Night Shyamalan's live-action interpretation of the Nickleodeon cartoon, which must, of course, have a video game tie-in.
"The Last Airbender" is a third-person action title that follows the cinematic tale of antagonist Prince Zuko as he attempts to capture our little baldheaded hero, Aang. As you pursue your quest, you'll travel through 10 levels filled with fast-paced combat and action. Whether you choose to play as the Airbender himself, the Prince or the Blue Spirit, you'll have a bevy of unique powers to choose from, including Aang's Tornadoes and Zuko's Firebending blasts. If you've played through the story and completed the final epic battle, try the game's multiplayer mode, where you and a friend can do battle against wave after wave of enemies.
"The Last Airbender" is what you would expect from a movie tie-in game: expanded plot and characters pulled straight from the big screen coupled with quick, easy-to-learn gameplay.
Media Link: Aasif Mandvi, the voice of Commander Zhao, also stars in "Ghost Town," which airs Tuesday, Aug. 3, on Cinemax.
Clash of the Titans
X360, PS3 / $59.99 / Available Now
Our second game also follows the release of a major motion picture, but long after the release of its cinematic brethren -- and it shows. "Clash of the Titans" is a third-person action game that places you in the role of chiseled Greek Perseus on his heroic quest to dispatch Hades' minions that have been unleashed on Earth. If you succeed, you'll gain the blessing of the gods; lose and you're a Kraken snack.
On your journey, you'll engage in well-choreographed combat with more than 100 mythological monsters. While the fighting engine seems to create a wide variety of ways to destroy your enemies, more than 80 customizable weapons add to the depth of combat.
Sure, you could call "Clash of the Titans" a movie tie-in game created only for merchandising, but with its deep combat, stunning graphics and expansion on the mythological theme, it could easily stand alone as an A-list action/adventure title.
Media Link: Marc Graue, the voice of Zeus, is the narrator of "Alaska State Troopers," which airs Sunday, Aug. 1, on National Geographic Channel.
