In fact, science is at the core of the Canadian's passion for effective, efficient methods of achieving optimal health. Pasternak, who holds degrees in exercise physiology and nutritional sciences and in kinesiology, spent several years as a nutrition and exercise scientist for Canada's defense department. And though he may have been military, Pasternak isn't militant when it comes to the diet and fitness program that endeared him to Hollywood. Espousing meals that embrace all food groups, including healthy fats and carbs (plus a no-limits cheat day), and workouts that take minutes instead of hours, Pasternak's plan is accessible to all lifestyles and incomes -- which made him a natural for "The Revolution."
"People have the opportunity to watch one show and get the absolute authority in each of our fields," he explains. "And most importantly, we're communicating with each other. So it's me giving you a dieting tip but also tying it to what Dr. Jen says about your medical health. And then Tim Gunn and I talk about what your new body shape will look like and how to dress it."
Pasternak says he's especially proud of the show's five-month real-time transformations. "If we have a woman who has lost 70 or 80 pounds, she's doing that while still taking care of her children, still working her job, still under the financial constraints that most of us are facing today." And that's truly revolutionary.
What are you currently reading? " 'Born to Run' by Christopher McDougall. It's about these indigenous tribes in Mexico that are the greatest distance runners in the world."
What did you have for dinner last night? "We got in late from a flight, but we had an apple/cinnamon/oatmeal frittata. It's one of my five-minute recipes. We got home at 11 p.m. At 11:05, we ate!"
What is your next project? "A video game for Microsoft X-Box Kinect and Nintendo called 'Hollywood Trainer.' My ability to work with people on a personalized basis is so limited. With this new technology, I can teach someone a new exercise, and if they do it wrong the game will know, and I'll say, 'Hey, keep your back straight!' That's pretty cool!"
When was the last vacation you took -- where and why? "We're about to take our honeymoon -- five months delayed. ... We're going to Japan."
