Indianapolis—An escaped jail inmate, who led police on a massive manhunt, is back behind bars.
Marion County Sheriff's Deputies say 18-year-old Cody Thurman was caught in Iowa early Sunday morning. Investigators say Thurman escaped the Marion County Jail just before 11 p.m. Friday. He was serving on a jail kitchen maintenance detail when he escaped his handcuffs and chain line and got away through the underground garage area of the City-County Building.
Police tracked him to a residential area on the west side of Indianapolis Saturday around noon, where they believe Thurman crashed a pickup truck. But Thurman was still able to get by police.
Late Saturday night, the Jackson County, Iowa Sheriff's Department got a call from a local bar owner with a tip that Thurman was at his business.
The bar owners said he became suspicious of Thurman and Googled his name. That's when he found media reports that Thurman was on the run from police.
Thurman was booked into jail in Bellview, Iowa, where he will await extradition back to Indianapolis.
