Child abuse detectives are investigating this as an injured child for now.

Detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Child Abuse section arrested a 23-year-old for allegedly causing injury to a 3-year-old boy on Tuesday.

Ian Huff is preliminarily charged with neglect of a dependent and battery.

Police said he was living with his girlfriend Ashley Lee and her children in a southeast side motel room.

Emergency responders were called to their room, Tuesday afternoon, and took Lee's three year old son to the hospital in critical condition. He was suffering from serious head injuries.

"It doesn't look good," said Metro Police spokeswoman Catherine Cummings.

The boy's grandmother told Fox 59 that he was Autistic and had a history of injuring himself, but detectives didn't buy it.

"At this point, detectives have not found any corroborating evidence that would suggest the child suffered from Autism," said Cummings.

Detectives are still sifting through the boy's medical history to find out if he's been hurt before.

Huff is currently being held at the Arresting Processing Center, awaiting formal charges.

Police are not releasing any information regarding the child’s injuries at this time.
