If your holiday travel plans involve taking a commercial airline flight beware of rising baggage fees.
There are ways to save and FOX 59 is helping you stretch your dollar with what you need to know before you go.
The luggage experts at Brenner Luggage in Indianapolis say they have just the thing for travelers tired of packing little and paying a lot.
"Here is the world's lightest luggage. The handles that pull out actually when it pushes in becomes part of the frame," Bob Brenner explained.
The carry-on in the world's lightest line-up is just $89.99. That is compared to $285 for a similar sized traditional duffel roller bag.
Brenner also suggests portable, hand-held luggage scales or even disposable underwear for those really wanting to pack light.
Several airlines have recently adjusted their baggage limitations and pricing. Here's the latest line-up:
1st Bag 2nd Bag
American Airlines $20 $30
Air Tran Airways $15 $25
Continental $15 $25
Delta/Northwest $15 $25
Frontier $20 $30
United $20 $30
US Airways $25 $35
Southwest FREE FREE
Southwest Airlines is quick to emphasize their free first and second bag promotion. Customer service representatives in Indianapolis told us they will bend over backwards to save their customers money.
"Do you have shoes? Do you have a jacket? Do you have a pillow you can take out? How about books? We do that. We do it a lot and a lot of airlines don't allow people to do that," Kelly Spoor said.
If you're one of those who wonder if you should just ship your clothing to grandma's house in Miami, Florida for example here is something to consider.
If you were to mail a 50 pound package from Indianapolis to Miami using the cheapest option, parcel post, it would cost $90.92 and it would be there in 5 days.
Those luggage fees don't sound so bad now. Happy traveling.
