South Bend CommunitySchool Corp. families will soon have access to several new or enhanced communication tools to get information about student grades and attendance, events at individual schools, bus stops and routes and more.

Starting Aug. 19, parents can log on tohttp://powerschool.sbcsc.k12.in.us to access a variety of information, including student schedules.

Once the school year begins, they can also follow their students' grades and attendance.

This fall, high school students will be given their own accounts so they, too, can check their grades online, said Sue Coney, spokeswoman for the district.

Another new offering, which parents can log onto athttp://transportation.sbcsc.k12.in.us/onscreen/MyStop/LoginMobile.aspx, provides information about bus numbers, pick-up times and bus stop locations.

Additionally, parents will be able to track -- in near real time -- the movement of their student's bus. That way, Coney said, they can quickly find out if buses are running late.

The school corporation also now has Twitter and Facebook pages. Individual school buildings will likely be adding social media pages, as well, she said.

Check out the district's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SouthBendCSC and follow it on Twitter at @SouthBendCSC.

And a new notification service called School Messenger has been implemented.

The telephone notification system will advise families of issues such as school closure because of inclement weather and school lockdowns, Coney said. It may also be used by individual schools to update parents on coming events.

Plus, families can elect to receive the notifications via text message and/or email.
