Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a murder-suicide in North Heidelberg Township in Berks County.

They say 39-year-old Donna Evans was distraught over the breakup of her relationship with her lover and that she bludgeoned her 11-year-old daughter to death and then set her home on fire.

Neighbors say they don't understand why Evans took her child's life.

"Between breaking up and being divorced, and I think, I'm pretty sure she was having financial problems," said neighbor Carl Hobwood.

Investigators say neighbors noticed smoke at a home in the 2300 block of Brownsville Road Sunday night. They called firefighters, who found two bodies inside. Police say Evans left several notes behind, and that those notes played a role in how police determined that this was a murder-suicide.

"It was thought out, that you would have time to write a half dozen letters to different people," said Tropper David Beohm.
