The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area needs your help with the costs for five horses recently rescued from a cruelty situation in Cumberland County.

The horses are now at a temporary foster home, but were found in unsanitary conditions.

All five horses were kept in an area approximately 20' by 20' for the past seven months. The area was filled with approximately 2 feet of feces and urine.

The horses suffer from an overall lack of appropriate nutrition, overgrown hooves, hoof rot, thrush (an infection of the hoof), parasites, skin ailments, and coats matted with feces. Further assessments are pending to determine if other conditions exist.

"These horses were neglected to such an extent that it will take a significant amount of time and resources to rehabilitate them," said Kelly Hitz, director of public relations at the Humane Society.
