HARRISBURG—Over three years ago, Ronnie Johnson was found by police on a city sidewalk a little after 1am, shot dead. Now, Harrisburg Police believe they have the men responsible under arrest. Aaron Lackey, 36, and Kenneth Randolph, 33, both of Harrisburg, will be booked this morning on charges of Criminal Homicide & Conspiracy, Carrying Firearm Without License and Persons Not to Possess Firearm for the Septemeber 20, 2007 murder of Ronnie Johnson.
"Sometimes they commit crimes thinking we forgot about them, but we did not," said Harrisburg Police Captain Elijah Massey.
A patrol officer in the area heard numerous gunshots that morning in the 2100 block of Moore Street. The officer found a man shot in the hand, and Johnson. The ensuing investigation suggested that Johnson was killed in the course of an attempted robbery.
A day after the shooting in 2007, Lackey was arrested for a weapons violation. Police couldn't link his illegal gun to the crime scene though. It took awhile, but detectives traced it back to a Perry County family that legally owned it. Luckily for police, they still had old shell casings from the gun.
"We submitted them to Pennsylvania State Police balastics and it took a long time, but eventually, they were able to link the shell casings to the crime scene so it proved that the gun Aaron Lackey had, is the murder weapon," said Detective John O'Connor.
And because of it, Johnson's family finally has the closure they spent years waiting for.
"It's fabulous, it's a wonderful day. It's almost four years for them to find who did this to him. My family is sad right now, but we're still happy that they caught them," said Johnson's counsin Nicole Waldron.
