STERLING, VIRGINIA—A Cumberland County man's soup has landed him in hot water with Customs and Border Protection officers. On Thursday night, Customs and Border Protection agents arrested 41-year-old Jose Acevedo of Carlisle as he came off a plane at Washington-Dulles International Airport and accused him of drug possession. Law enforcement officialssay Acevedo tried to smuggle nearly 2,000 grams of cocaine into the country by hiding the drugs inside various powdered soup mix packages. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security described it as "dopey soup."
The seized cocaine has a wholesale value of $52,000 and a street value of $140,000. Acevedo was flying on a TACA Airlines flight from El Salvador at about 9:30 p.m. Drug-sniffing dogs discovered the narcotics during luggage inspection.
