Hershey, Dauphin County—The Hershey Bears will be on the ice Friday Night for the AHL Outdoor Classic. In order to better prepare for the game at Citizens Bank Park, they pick the coldest morning of the season to go outdoors. The guys lace up their skates, put on the pads and in some cases, wear goggles and a ski cap to go outside and play some hockey Wednesday morning on the outdoor rink at Milton Hershey School.
It's something almost all of the players did as kids growing up. Skating in below 20 degree weather will certainly wake you up. The Bears say this is an awesome chance to do something unique.
"Once everyone gets into it, it will be exciting," said Bears Chris Bourque. "It's going to be definitely different with the wind in your face and all the different elements of being outside compared to being in a building. It's something i'm really looking forward to."
Bears Center Keith Aucoin added, "It's just staying focused and sticking to your game plan, going out there and playing your game. At the same time, you really have to enjoy it because you'll probably never get a chance like this again."
Aucoin and Bourque were both named to the AHL All-Star team on Wednesday. They join teammate Boyd Kane who will be a playing captain in the all-star event that takes place January 29th and 30th in Atlantic City.
