DICKINSON TOWNSHIP, CUMBERLAND COUNTY—Traffic is back to normal this morning after a tractor trailer accident closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 for over two hours Monday morning. The truck was carrying 25,000 pounds of frozen pasta when it lost control and overturned. The truck jacknifed across the road forcing crews to shut both northbound lanes down completely while the cleanup took place.
The accident happened just before 3 a.m. The truck was traveling in the left hand lane of the northbound lanes when State Police say the driver lost control. He traveled into the grass median of I-81 making the trailer shift and sending it out of control. By the time the driver could get the truck back on the road, it was too late and it overturned. The tractor then dragged the overturned trailer for about a 100 feet.
The truck jacknifed right past exit 44 for Allen Road. Motorists were able to get off at exit 44 and turn back on to the interstate just north of the wreck.
Crews were able to upright the trailer with all of its contents and tow it away in one piece. That made the cleanup go faster and crews reopened the road right around 5:30 a.m.
The driver was not hurt in the crash however he is facing several charges.
