CARLISLE, CUMBERLAND COUNTY—The school year is just ending and kids all across Central PA are thinking of summer. But the United Way is already planning for next year, trying to collect supplies to get some needy kids started on the right foot.
Today, the United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland is kicking off its annual Stuff the Bus campaign, collecting hundreds of backpacks, pens, pencils and notepads. The group hopes to collect enough to donate to about 600 kids. Generally, the kids don't have the means to buy their own school supplies.
The second annual project will kickoff today at noon at the United Way of Carlisle's headquarters at 145 South Hanover Street in Carlisle. The group will be collecting supplies for nearly a week, with the culmination taking place with the Stuff the Bus Day.
Stuff the Bus day will take place on July 27 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Carlisle Commons on Noble Blvd. Last year, the United Way of Carlisle stuffed one bus. This year, they hope to stuff two buses to be able to help out as many kids as possible.
