It does not seem too long ago when Joe Girardi and Yankee representatives were debating whether Ivan Nova was ready to be a part of New York's starting rotation or if he should be sent down to the Minors.

After recording his 13th win of the year, Nova has not only ended any debate if he is ready for the Yankees starting rotation, but has started new conversations if he is their second best pitcher.

Nova pitched 7 strong innings, did not give up a hit until the 4th inning to Minnesota's Joe Mauer, and was able to pitch himself out of jams in the 5th and 6th innings.

"I feel really confident in my slider," Nova said. "We worked on it, we got it back, and it's a pitch that, in situations, I can throw to left-handed hitters and get the out."

Nova has been almost light's out in his last few starts, including his return games from the Minor Leagues. He is 9-0 in his last ten starts with a 3.48 ERA.

The Yankee offense did not berate or smash the opposing pitching, but they provided enough offense to win the game. And with the way nova was pitching, they did not have to provide a lot of runs.

New York displayed signs of small ball to gain their first run of the afternoon in the 6th. Robinson Cano hit a double and moved to third on a Nick Swisher fly out and then ran home on a Russell Martin sacrifice fly.

However, the Bronx Bombers retained their nickname has Curtis Granderson slammed a long ball that evaded the Twins outfielders and was able to hustle home for an inside-the-park home run. It was his first one since 2007 and tied him for the Major League lead in homers with 35. To show he is in the home run chase as well, Mark Teixeira hit a homer immediately after Granderson for his 34th to secure the score at 3-0.

David Robertson and Mariano Rivera combined to get the final 6 outs as Rivera recorded his 33rd save of the season.

"It's a good road trip," Girardi said. "We won two series. Four-game series can be tough to win, and these guys were swinging the bats pretty good when they left Detroit. ... To end it 5-2, that's a pretty good road trip. It sure is a lot better than 4-3."
