HEWLETT BAY PARK, N.Y. (WPIX)—A jilted Long Island woman was arrested and charged after police say she broke into her estranged husband's waterfront mansion and attempted to start a fire.
Nassau County police say Esther Hershko, 49, was arrested early Wednesday after she illegally entered her husband's Hewlett Bay Park home and poured charcoal lighter fluid throughout the house while 5 people slept inside.
Hershko, who resides in Woodmere, wanted to set the fire in an attempt to kill her estranged husband, his fiancé, their five-month-old daughter and her own children, officials said.
The suspect fled when "her estranged husband was awakened by the sound of his dog having a seizure and, subsequently, called police," Nassau County police said in a press release.
When fleeing the scene, Hershko threw the empty container of lighter fluid into the bushes in front of the home. A neighbor called 911 after seeing Hershko acting "suspiciously" outside the residence.
Responding officers arrested Hershko at the scene a short time later.
At her arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead Thursday, a prosecutor charged that Hershko not only poured lighter fluid throughout the Hewlett Bay Park home, but doused the infant and her sleeping area with the flamable substance.
Hereshko was charged with five counts of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree burglary, second-degree attempted arson and fourth-degree possession of a dangerous weapon. She is being held without bail and was ordered to return to court Monday.
Police say no one was injured inside the home and the dog is expected to recover.
