NEW YORK (WPIX)—The actor accused of brutally killing his mother with a sword was arraigned Friday in New York City on charges of second-degree murder.
Michael Brea reportedly didn't say a word as we was arraigned from the prison ward section of the hospital, where he has been since he was arrested on Nov. 23. He has been undergoing a battery of psychological tests since his arrest.
On the morning that Brea's mother was hacked to death at 501 Park Place in Prospect Heights, neighbors reported hearing female screams coming from the apartment on the second floor, starting at about 1:30 a.m.
"I hear the brother chasing her [his mother] through the house and he's just saying a bunch of like [Bible] passages like, 'Repent, Repent, Repent,'" said neighbor Gregory Clare. "I heard him chasing her through the house and I hear a loud scream and so I have my father call the cops, call 911."
Vernal Bent, who lives on the third floor, heard Brea repeatedly scream words like "Sinner," "Moses," "Jerusalem" and "the grand architect of the universe" -- a term the Freemasons use to refer to God.
When responding officers encountered the mentally disturbed 31-year-old, who was sitting in a chair, holding a Bible and the three-foot sword. He was very combative toward the first responders, who had to taser the man in order to subdue him.
Brea was incoherent and still on a religious rant when he was placed on a stretcher and transported to Kings County Hospital for psychological evaluation. A police guard was also assigned to Brea.
Officers described the crime scene as "extremely bloody" where the victim was discovered and immediately pronounced dead. She was identified as 55-year-old Yannick Brea, and reports say the church-going mother was found in a kneeling position.
