Giant balloons, floats, marching bands and clowns with confetti brought smiles to thousands of revelers in Manhattan today.

Thousands lined the streets for the 83rd annual Macy's

Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Katie Stam, Miss America 2009, waved to crowds from a Statue of Liberty float.

She shared it with Meb Keflezighi (keh-FLEZ'-gee), the first American in 11 years to win the New York City Marathon.

Shailesh Dighe (sheye-LAYSH' dih-GAY') and his family came to the fabled parade to snap pictures of celebrities including rapper Jay Sean and singer-actress Keke Palmer.

Despite the crowds, Dighe says the parade is "totally worth it."

For the first time, the parade route bypassed Broadway. The new route crosses streets and avenues. It includes turns around five corners, and is slightly longer than in previous years.

Johanna Castillo of Guttenberg, N.J., sys the new route seems to better accommodate the crowds.
