BENSONHURST, N.Y. (WPIX)—Grim video caught by a fourth floor security camera shows Officer Carlos Olmedo as he was mowed down by a motorcycle on 20th Avenue early Sunday morning.
The four-year NYPD veteran was chasing three car theft suspects as they sprinted out of a stolen Toyota Corolla in front of 1975 84th Street in Bensonhurst. Olmedo's partner made it across the street, but Olmedo, a father of three, was not so lucky. He was unconscious when taken from the scene with severe head trauma and brain swelling.
"It's in the hands of God," said a somber Mayor Michael Bloomberg, as he updated reporters inside Lutheran Medical Center.
The three car theft suspects, all 18-year-olds, were charged with felonies, including causing an injury during the commission of a felony and criminal possession of stolen property. Charges could be upgraded if Olmedo does not survive.
The motorcycle driver is not facing charges. He was properly licensed and alcohol did not appear to be involved in the crash. The driver was thrown from his motorcycle on impact, but he was conscious when an ambulance took him to the hospital.
