STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11)—A retired social worker -- who reportedly lived alone -- was found dead inside her Staten Island apartment, after neighbors called 911 and reported smoke coming from the ground floor.
The victim has been identified as Irma Galindo, 63, of Silver Lake.
According to a FDNY spokesperson, firefighters rushed to Galindo's home on Victory Boulevard near Theresa Place a little after 2 a.m. Saturday. They forced the door open to find the victim unconscious and food burning in the oven; the flames were contained there.
Galindo was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say she may've been overcome by smoke -- or had a heart attack. An autopsy will determine that.
