A flash-flood watch is in effect for the metro area until Saturday morning, the National Weather Service said.
Though the worst of the storms are still to come, according to forecasters, area airports are already experiencing weather-related delays of two hours or more, the Federal Aviation Administration is reporting.
Forecasters said "numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop" Friday afternoon and are expected to dump 1 1/2 to 2 inches of rain across the metropolitan area - though amounts in excess of 3 inches are possible in some locales.
"Rainfall of this magnitude will result in flooding," the National Weather Service said, "due to excessive runoff from already saturated ground, as well as flooding of urban and poor drainage areas."
In addition there is a risk of "severe" thunderstorms in the afternoon, forecasters said.
Those storms could bring "damaging winds" - and even a tornado, according to the weather service forecasters.
The FAA said there are storm-related delays of two hours and 44 minutes on arrivals at Kennedy, two hours delays at Newark-Liberty and one hour and 58 minute delays at LaGuardia Friday. All are because of thunderstorms elsewhere in the country, the FAA said.
Delays at Long Island-MacArthur are less than 15 minutes, the FAA is reporting.
Travelers should check with their air carriers before heading to the airport.
Roads and utilities may be affected by storm activity Friday afternoon and overnight.
Fortunately, after the storms pass clear skies are expected for at least a good part of the weekend, forecasters said.
Saturday is expected to be "mostly sunny," according to the weather service, though there is a 40-percent chance of rain and thunderstorms on Sunday, forecasters said.
Highs both days are expected to be in the low 80s.
