NEW YORK (PIX11)—Rumors have swirled in the wake of the Penn State sex scandal. PIX11 News separates the fact from the fiction by answering questions you may have asked.
What's the deal with these rumors boys were abused by PSU donors?
Did a D.A. investigating the case disappear? Yes. District Attorney Ray Gricar had been investigating sex abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky as long ago as nineteen ninety-eight. Close friends said that he didn't have enough evidence at first, but.... in two-thousand five, Gricar disappeared. Also missing -- his laptop. But it resurfaced years later -- with the hard drive gone.
Jerry Sandusky retired in 1999, but he kept ties with the school. How close? The former assistant coach charged with raping boys is considered an emeritus, or retired, coach, keeping full rights and privileges at the Central Pennsylvania campus until last weekend. On November 6th, the university banned the 1965 graduate of Penn State from the campus of his alma mater.
What's Mike McQueary's background? The assistant coach, 37, who first alerted his close friend and mentor Joe Paterno that he had seen Sandusky sexually abusing an 11 year-old, is from Happy Valley, where Penn State is located. McQueary was quarterback of the storied team when he was a student in the '90's, and has for years been the person Paterno communicates directions with on the field from Paterno's perch in the pressbox at the Nittany Lions' Stadium.
Penn State is a state university. What's the governor's role in all of this? Governor Tom Corbett ordered the investigation into Sandusky and Penn State's possible coverup in 2009, when Corbett was Pennsylvania's attorney general. Now that he's governor, his position automatically places him on the Penn State Board of Trustees, and Corbett led the board's efforts to fire Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier.
Has Joe Paterno lawyered up? There are rumors that Paterno sought legal help from the same Washington lawyer, J. Sedgwick Sollers, who represented George H.W. Bush in the Iran-Contra affair. So far, that appears to only be a rumor, one which Paterno's son has denied.
Has Mike McQueary received death threats? Absolutely. The death threats are the reason the university had originally determined that McQueary would not be on the field for Saturday's game against Nebraska. That decision was revised late Friday afternoon to place McQueary on paid administrative leave until further notice.
