Roosevelt Islanders will be forced to reroute their commutes Monday in response to a six month tram modernization project that will completely suspend Roosevelt Island tram service.

Beginning 2 a.m. March 1st, the tram will be disabled so that it can be almost completely replaced. Nearly all aspects of the Tram's operating system, except for the three tower bases that support the track cables, will be brand new.

New generators, motors, and gears will prevent electrical malfunctions from interrupting regular tram service. The installation of a "dual haul" system will also allow each tram cabin to operate independently of the other.

The new cabins, along with a wide gauge double cable track will provide for a more stable ride in high winds.

The tram is expected to be up and running by September 3, 2010.

The aerial tramway system, which has become a stable of the Manhattan skyline, carries more than two million riders a year.
