Hundreds of thousands of people are still without power Sunday across the tri-state area, after a powerful storm swept through the northeast.

The storm, which contained gusting winds as strong at 70 mph, knocked down tress and power lines, sparking electrical fires. More than a half-million customers were waiting for power to be restored Sunday.

New Jersey:

PSE&G reported about 120,000 customers were without power Sunday at 10 p.m. About 80,000 of those outages were in Bergen County, while about 21,000 customers in Passaic and Essex counties are affected. The utility provides electric service to 2.1 million customers.

Crews will continue to work throughout the day and night to restore service. The utility is also getting assistance from utilities in Ohio and Pennsylvania through an arrangement called mutual aid. About 200 workers from AEP and Duquesne Light will help restore power in hard-hit Bergen County beginning tomorrow morning.

Based on the extensive damage – especially in Bergen County, PSE&G is estimating that the majority of customers will be restored by Wednesday with the remainder on Thursday.
