BROOKLYN, N.Y. (WPIX)—A young woman who worked for Mayor Bloomberg's office was left brain dead after she and her Ivy League college roommate were struck by a hit-and-run driver in Brooklyn Sunday.
Erinn Phelan, 22, who worked for the NYC Civic Corps, and her friend Alma Guerrero, 23, were crossing the street when a green Acura Legend came barreling down Flatbush Avenue, the Daily News reported. The two women were struck on the corner of Prospect Place around 4:30 a.m. Sunday.
Phelan and Guerrero -- who roomed together at Brown University -- were rushed to Kings County Hospital with serious head injuries.
Phelan was later declared brain dead. Guerrero is reported to be in stable condition.
The car involved in the accident was found abandoned, just a few blocks from the site of the accident on Pacific St., near the Atlantic Avenue Terminal. The driver's side windshield was completely bashed in, and the side view mirror was completely sheared off.
Officials say the car is registered to an address in the Bronx. A records trace revealed the car's owner fits the description of the driver.
Investigators believe the suspect may have fled the area by train, police said.
