UPPER EAST SIDE, NY (PIX11)
Dog walkers everywhere, beware. No one wants to see your dog’s feces laying on the sidewalk, especially in East Harlem where local politicans have decided to launch a “No Poop Fairy” campaign.
The campaign, that originated in Colorado, will launch on Saturday at Thomas Jefferson Park. Volunteer will post signs, hand out t-shirts that depict a fictional poop fairy character that looks a lot like the tooth fairy and hand out baggies.
“The poop isn’t going to magically disappear, that’s what we want to get across,” said Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito.
Mark-Viverito say her office has been fielding a number of complaints from constituents, especially those who live in public housing, about an increased number of people who fail to pick up after their dogs. Frank, who owns a five year old pooch, Poppy, does not understand how dog owners walk away without picking up.
“Sometimes I walk around and I step in that stuff,” said Frank.
Ted, who also walks his dog in East Harlem, says he carries extra bags to offer to dog owners who forget.
“Yes, I carry several bags in my pants pocket, in suit jacket,” said Ted.
The poop fairy campaign originated in Jefferson County, CO. Once the campaign went viral on the internet, Boise Idaho adopted the campaign and now New York.
Mark-Viverito hopes the campaign helps curb offenders and reminds people that not picking up after your dog is illegal.
“There is a fine involved, people have that responsibility,” she said.
