BROOKLYN, NY (PIX11)—"Jaws," also known as Joey Chestnut, has won the annual Nathan's hot dog eating men's competition in Brooklyn yet again, and this time he did so by downing 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes.
The crowd swelled to an estimated 40,000 people, with many fans cheering for Chestnut, who's Fourth-of-July victory marked his sixth at the competition. The California native fasted for 3 days before the big event to accommodate the belly busting buns and franks.
For the women, Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas defended her title by devouring 45 hot dogs (and buns), beating out her previous record of 41. Thomas told PIX11 News that she was motivated by her upcoming birthday to gobble up the extra dogs.
"I was shooting for that, and I did it cause that's my age, 45 years old this year," she said.
Up Until last year, men and women participated in the same contest.
The contest started a century ago as a sideshow on the Coney Island boardwalk. When Nathan's Famous Restaurant saw the draw it had for the boardwalk and eatery, it decided to join the fun.
Compared to the hype and excitement the contest brings, the aftermath can be somewhat anticlimactic. PIX11 News reporter Ellyn Marks asked Chestnut what the morning after is like. He responded:
"It's not the morning after. It's probably 5 hours after that's the problem. It's not pretty. Things happen naturally. I've made my body adapt."
