Police are investigating a deadly, wrong-way crash during the early morning hours Sunday on the FDR Drive, that killed two people and injured two others -- one of many fatal car crashes that took place over a 12-hour period between Saturday and Sunday.
The multi-car crash took place just before 3 a.m. on the FDR South at the Houston Street exit.
According to investigators, a 26-year-old man behind the wheel of a 1996 Nissan Maxima was heading northbound in the southbound lanes, when he careened into a 2002 Dodge Caravan, being driven by a 53-year-old man. Then, police say, a 22-year-old woman driving a 2000 Mazda rear-ended the Caravan.
The drivers involved in the initial wrong-way crash never made it to the hospital. The 22-year-old driver of the Mazda and her 31-year-old male passenger were rushed to Bellevue Hospital Center nearby; they're listed in stable condition.
Police will release the names of the two men killed once their families have been notified.
Meanwhile, according to authorities, on Saturday, Dawn Affoumani, 42, was struck and killed by a tan Mazda at the corner of White Plains Road and Story Avenue in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx. This happened around 9:45 p.m. Affoumani died at the scene. Police are on the hunt for that driver.
And in Queens, around 4 a.m. Sunday, the driver of a 2006 Lincoln Town Car slammed into a utility pole while traveling east on South Conduit Avenue and Linden Boulevard in Lindenwood. He was ejected from the car. Police say Darren Green of Jamaica was rushed to Brooklyn's Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead.
And a few hours later, a hit-and-run driver struck and killed Luis Rosada, 75, as he was crossing the intersection at Broadway and West 138th Street in the Hamilton Heights section of Harlem.
