NEW YORK (WPIX)—Disgraced Senator Hiram Monserrate, who was expelled from the state Senate last month after being convicted of a misdemeanor assault on his girlfriend, announced that he wants his seat back.
The embattled Democrat launched his election campaign Tuesday with a familiar slogan made popular by President Barack Obama: "Yes we can."
Monserrate's apparent comeback was made possible after he gathered enough signatures to get his name on the ballot for next week's special election. He will be facing off with Democratic assemblyman Jose Peralta.
Monserrate became the first New York State Senator to be kicked out of the Senate since 1861. He is currently appealing the expulsion.
