New York City police arrested a 17-year-old male in connection with a shooting that occurred in Coney Island Wednesday night.

A mother of seven is in critical condition after being shot in the head while apparently trying to defend two of her children from three men. Cops say the men also suffered gunshot wounds.

Police say the four victims were shot during a dispute next to a childrens' playground in the O'Dwyer Houses, a public housing complex located at 2950 West 35th Street, one block away from the beach, just before 9 p.m.

Victoria Rogucki, a 36-year-old mother of seven, was trying to intervene in a fight between her two children -- a 19-year-old man and 16-year-old girl -- and three unidentified men in front of her ground-floor apartment when shots rang out, according to her husband Abie Maldonado and other witnesses.

When the gunfire stopped, Rogucki was discovered with a gunshot to the head.

Rogucki was transported to Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park, where she is listed in critical condition. Maldonado told PIX 11 News his wife might not survive from her critical injury.

Maldonado said she was an innocent bystander, who was trying to defend her children.

"She was a wonderful mother, she has always been there, always defending my kids. This is what happened right now, with her defending my children," he tearfully told PIX 11 News.

The three men, who were also shot, fled the scene before being located by police.

One of the nabbed individuals have been identified as 17-year-old Ishmel Rogucki. He is charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

A second individual is still being sought by police.
