Bernie Madoff was treated for serious injuries after he fell out of his North Carolina prison bed, according to a local television station in Raleigh, N.C.

The fallen financer was reportedly treated at Duke Hospital in Durham last Friday and discharged two days ago.

Sources first reported that his injuries were consistent with assault. But, sources now say Madoff was not attacked in prison, but that he fell off a bed onto his face.

The 71-year-old reportedly suffered facial bleeding, facial fractures, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

Prison officials will not confirm the report. They have only said that Madoff was being treated at the Federal Medical Center, part of the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in Butner, N.C.

Madoff has been imprisoned since March, after pleading guilty to cheating thousands of investors out of billions of dollars. He confessed to his private-investment business being a fraud.
