CENTEREACH, N.Y. (WPIX)—A mother and daughter on Long Island were killed early Saturday morning after a fire tore through their Centereach home, according to Suffolk County police.
Dorothy Reinhard, 77, and Elaine Moore, 60, who were long-time roommates, perished in the blaze on Fulton Street. The flames broke out around 4:45 a.m. and were first detected by an upstairs tenant who smelled smoke.
Reinhard and Moore were rushed to Stony Brook University Medical Center where they were pronounced dead.
Neighbors said they woke up to sirens and smoke pouring out of the house.
Authorities said, so far, they do not believe the circumstances surrounding the fire are suspicious.
Investigators on Saturday were on the scene of the incident taking pictures inside the house and trying to determine the cause of the blaze. Carl Reinhard, Dorothy Reinhard's son and Elaine Moore's brother, said the house had recently been under renovation. He said it was equipped with brand new appliances and a new fire alarm.
"Everything was brand new," Reinhard told Newsday. "So, what happened?"
