A tragic hit and run collision along the Grand Central Parkway in Queens left a 65-year-old man dead early Thursday morning.

According to police, the victim was behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Galant that apparently careened into another vehicle some time after 5 a.m. near LaGuardia Airport. When the driver exited his vehicle to survey the damage, another passing vehicle struck him and did not stop.

To add insult to injury, police said the vehicle involved in the initial collision also fled the scene, leaving the victim to fend for himself.

Responding emergency crews transported the 65-year-old man to Elmhurst Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police were still searching Thursday afternoon for the two drivers involved in the both collisions. Detectives were reportedly reviewing traffic surveillance cameras near the scene.

The early morning incident prompted police to close several lanes of traffic on the westbound side of the Grand Central Parkway.
