BRONX, NY (PIX11)—A tragic accident on the Bronx River Parkway Sunday afternoon left seven family members from three generations dead, and the living relatives reeling.
"It's really bad for us. It's really painful, said Danny Gomez, who lost his grandparents, aunts, and cousins in the accident.
Another cousin, Omar Torres, said it was the innocence lost in the form of his three young cousins that made the tragedy so difficult to absorb, "The thing that hurts me the most is my little cousins that passed away, they didn't really have a chance in life you know," said Torres.
Jonoel Gonzalez lost his mother, Maria, little sister Jocelyn, and his grandparents Ana Julia and Jacob in the accident.
He reflected on the legacies of his "abuelos" and what they left behind, "Two people started this whole family, so you can imagine every time they come around it's a big deal," said Gonzalez.
Together for more than 60 years, their love story had only brought them to New York once before. The plan this time was to take in more sights and sounds and to do so with the family they rarely saw, "They came a year ago for the first time to the United States and this was their second time coming and unfortunately it was short lived for them."
Torres, who rode all day from Maryland on Sunday after being informed of the accident, did have a message regarding what he feels is a flawed Bronx River Parkway, "I just hope that this time around New York City decides to put some stronger barricades or something."
This was the second crash in less than a year in which a car flipped off the parkway -- on June 4, 2011, two people were despite their car falling more than 22 feet onto the parking lot of a police station.
