NEW ROCHELLE (AP)—An off-duty Eastchester police officer has been arrested and charged after police said he accidentally shot an acquaintance while "showing off" his gun.
According to New Rochelle Police Capt. Joseph Schaller, officer James Pileggi was sitting in his SUV with two other men, demonstrating the laser feature on his 9mm Glock service weapon when it accidentally went off.
Pileggi, who was sitting in the passenger seat, "recklessly discharged the weapon" striking 27-year-old Andrew Everett in the throat who was standing outside the vehicle, Schaller said.
Everett was transported to Sound Shore Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m., police said.
Authorities later recovered the weapon at the scene.
Pileggi was arraigned Tuesday afternoon in New Rochelle. He has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in the fatal shooting.
Neighbors reported hearing a shot fired in the otherwise quiet neighborhood and didn't know what had occurred until police arrived.
Police have not yet classified the shooting as a homicide and said the case is still under investigation.
