The blackout of July 2006 will never be forgotten in Astoria.

People suffered for 9 long days in sweltering heat. Following the blackout, a local group called "Western Queens Power for the People" sued Con Edison and won a $63 million settlement for damages. It included a $100 credit for those who lost power and $7 million for community greening projects.

Over the past few weeks "Power for the People" has reached out to residents to find out how best to spend the $7 million. They've had interesting suggestions including one from Aravella Simotas, a member of Community Board 1 and a lifelong Astoria resident. She wants the money to be spent on Mt. Sinai Hospital.
