A total of 13 people were arrested, three are still at large. Among them, two leaders 21 year old Dario Wynerman and 64 year old career criminal, Mitchell Collins.
"Collins has been involved in guns one way or another for his entire adult life," said Kelly.
Kelly said an undercover detective known as 'Detective X' spent endless hours gaining the trust of Collins. Once he did, Collins began selling him weapons one at a time. At the time of his arrest yesterday, Collins had sold more than 70 weapons to the officer. And in total, over the course of the entire operation, 88 weapons were sold unknowingly to detectives.
Bloomberg emphasized how important undercover operations, like these, are to keeping New York City's streets safer. He explained that over the course of a year, 5,000 illegal weapons are seized.
"This is a national problem, a rural problem and an urban problem," said Mayor Bloomberg.
All 16 people will face felony gun possession charges. Each charge comes with a five to 15 year sentence.
