The blistering cold that descended on the region in the second week of January contributed to one death, state health officials reported.
The Allegany County man was 65 or older, according to officials who did not release any more information. That brings to three the number of cold-related deaths this year and seven this winter, according to the weekly report from the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
The death came amid a polar vortex, an extremely cold pocket of air that pushed unusually far south and lingered for days. Temperatures have since become more moderate.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
