Thunderstorm forecast

Strong storms, some possibly turning severe, are expected to bring brief periods of heavy rain and gusty winds across Central Maryland on Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Meteorologists at the Storm Prediction Center do not expect to issue a severe thunderstorm watch across the region, but are nonetheless eyeing a stretch from Northern Virginia up into southern New England for storm development.

Heavy moisture in the air, which forecasters called an "unseasonably moist air mass", is expected to fuel the storms enough to produce as much as 1.5 inches to 2 inches of rain in some areas.

Storms are expected to be fast-moving, so widespread flash flooding is not expected, according to the National Weather Service's Baltimore/Washington forecast office. But isolated flooding is possible if multiple heavy thunderstorms affect the same location, forecasters cautioned.
